Music Monday- The Difference

Beautiful black and white rose with note on the petals
I’ve been married for almost 14 years and with my husband for 15. I don’t envy those that have to navigate the waters of beginning a new relationship. I do recall, however, how difficult it was to read someone. Are they interested? Are you coming in too strong? Not strong enough? Before my husband ever asked me on a date he was always THERE. He would be in the periphery although we had never really been introduced let alone friends, at the time. Some fringe of my friends were friends with his fringe and slowly, he just started spending more time with me even if the others weren’t around. It took me awhile, but I figured out he had a crush on me. The next step was deciding if I was interested. I started going out of my way to try to talk to him. I needed to figure him out. I would drop hints about movies, which I thought he would be interested in seeing, and mentioning that I wanted to see them as well. I tried to give so many HINTS but I was far too subtle.

Somehow, he got the nerve to ask me to prom. Then I said no. 😀 The story for how we ever came together is for another time. What I wanted to think about this week, is the subtle differences between things like, “How are you?” (we were never a “what’s up?” crowd) and “What are your plans because I want to come too.” Tyler Rich’s “The Difference” exemplifies the issue.

I’m tired of sleeping on us
I’m over dodging this crush
I’m sick of waiting 10 minutes just to text you back
So you don’t get to thinkin’ that I’m too attached
I’m more than benefit friends
I’m more than just a weekend binge
I want you to be my hottie riding shottie, I don’t want nobody’s body but your body, babe
All I’m tryna say is

There’s a difference between “miss ya” and “I miss your face”
And there’s a difference in “What’s going on?” and “Baby, how was your day?”
Yeah, there’s a hell of a difference in saying three words or kinda just meaning two
And there’s a difference in “Love ya” and “I love you”
And I wanna be the difference, yeah I do

I wanna be the difference between “Hey, what’s up?’ and “What are we gonna do tonight?”
Between “Yeah, she’s cool, we hang out sometimes” and “That girl right there, she’s mine”
Between leading ya on and holdin’ your hand
Sittin’ it out and “Girl, let’s dance”
Between playing it safe and taking the chance
Yeah, pumpin’ the brakes and hittin’ the gas

There’s a difference between “miss ya” and “I miss your face”
And there’s a difference in “What’s going on?” and “Baby, how was your day?”
Yeah, there’s a hell of a difference in saying three words or kinda just meaning two
And there’s a difference in “Love ya” and “I love you”

And I wanna be the difference, close the distance
And be that puzzle piece you didn’t even know you was missing baby
Ohh, I wanna be the difference, yeah I do

There’s a difference between “miss ya” and “I miss your face”
And there’s a difference in “What’s going on?” and “Baby, how was your day?”
Yeah, there’s a hell of a difference in saying three words or kinda just meaning two
And there’s a difference in “Love ya” and “I love you”
And I wanna be the difference, oh yeah
I wanna be the difference
I wanna be the difference

  1. I never heard that song before and it brought tears to my eyes…so sweet! My husband and I met while both worked (waitress & bus boy) at H&H restaurant in King of Prussia, PA during college years. We will be married 50 years on August 31st this year.
