That is the date the painting was done, not the date of the battle. It’s a scene from the American Revolutionary War. Lord Cornwallis surrendered after the Battle of Yorktown in Virginia. I grew up just a few hours away from there and I’ve always thought it was so amazing how important that little town is to American history.
