I’m a big fan of the tv show Chosen. I didn’t think I would be. I have found a lot of Bible-inspired films and shows corny extremely lacking in all things theatrical. It always puzzled me because the Bible is the greatest story and drama of all time. Anyway, I gave Chosen a try and love it! My whole family enjoys watching it. Who would have thought that a show about Jesus could be so Biblicly sound, inspiring, and BINGEABLE all at the same time.
In Season Three, the scene of Jesus walking on the water arises. He calls out to Peter in a boat in the midst of a storm. We all know the story. At first, Peter does well, and then he begins to sink. BUT that is when Jesus reaches for him. The show does an excellent job of creating a backstory for what might be going on in Peter’s mind at the moment. Why does he doubt? After everything he’s seen, how could he lose his faith and focus?
Watching the scene unfold was moving, because until almost the final moment, I wasn’t sure which boat scene would take place. The Bible records another incident of the disciples in a boat on stormy water. Jesus was asleep and they thought he didn’t care about them.
In this song, I imagine it is not the listener that is holding on to turmoils of life. We often hear “Just hold on, it gets better” or something along those lines as a cliche. It sounds like we are holding on through our own strength and eventually it will be rewarded. However, we have no strength of our own.
What if we let go of our control and expectations? What if all we did was hold onto Jesus? And the times when we can’t hold His hand any longer, we kept reaching out. That’s when we find out He was holding us the entire time.
And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
Matthew 8:24-26
