I’m a big fan of the tv show Chosen. This song reminds me of an episode that explores context for Jesus walking on the water and calling Simon Peter to him. Jesus has just fed 5,000 hungry people with only a few loaves of bread and some fish. Simon and his wife have had a terrible personal blow and they wonder why bad things could happen to someone in the Messiah’s inner circle.
As Simon cries in Jesus’ arms, he tells him:
“Why do you think I allow trials? They prove the genuineness of your faith. They strengthen you. This is strengthening you! Keep your eyes on me!”
Simon begins to sink and goes underwater. Jesus reaches for him and pulls him out. Simon immediately embraces him and says, “Don’t let me go.”
Jesus reassures him with, “I’ve got you.”
After walking Simon back to the boat, Jesus says, “I have much planned for you, Simon. Including hard things. Just keep your eyes on me.”
Once inside the boat, the other disciples finally seem aware that Simon hasn’t just been in a temper, he’s been going through something that is breaking him. They offer support where they have been impatient.
Simon clings to Jesus and says, “Don’t let me go. I’m sorry,” over and over again.
Jesus calms the storm and then says, “I’m here. I’m always here. I let people go hungry, but I feed them.
God is there, in your story. It may read like a lot of things. A lot of disasters. Things that we would rather skip over or avoid. But He won’t leave you there alone.
If you want to watch the scene I have summarized, it is linked below the song video.
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
