I’ve tried to find out and am not sure! This is a copy of what’s in the Bodleian Library and it’s unclear who the original artist was. I was unable to find much artwork of him. Other depictions do not have the redness. My theories are either the artist thought it was a sign of good health or a nod to his actual ill-health as it is thought that Alfred may have suffered from Crohn’s disease.
Wonder why his cheeks are so red?!
